Franco-German Dual Master’s degree
in Architecture and Urban Projects

The Franco-German Double Master in Architecture and Urban Design in an International Context has been set up by ENSAS and the Faculty of Architecture of the KarIsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). This double Master’s degree aims to train a new generation of architects/urban planners, capable of fitting into the territorial economic logics of a region by intervening on urban, architectural and landscape issues.

Content

to master the tools and methods necessary to reason and intervene at all spatial scales, from the city to the territory, or from the building to the neighborhood. The knowledge and know-how acquired in this training are applicable in an international and Franco-German context. The tutoring courses offered throughout the studies allow students to deepen their project theme of Master. In addition to the courses to be validated, students must carry out a two-month internship in an agency in the partner country

 

The diploma file is made up of three documents :

  • Master of Science in Architektur, issued by the KIT ;
  • State diploma of Architect grade of Master, delivered by the ENSAS ;
  • certificate  attesting participation and success in a Franco-German course of study labeled by the Franco-German University (UFA).
     

Specificities

  • 1er Semester at ENSAS ;
  • 2e Semester at the KIT ; 
  • 3e Semester: students study at their home institution, while taking the equivalent of 60% of their courses at the partner institution ; 

Candidates holding

A Diploma in Architecture (DEEA), or foreign equivalent with a minimum level of B2 in German (according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages). Ten students (maximum) per institution are selected.

procEdure

CANDIDATES FROM WITHIN THE EUROPEAN UNION
Candidates studying in a school of architecture in France must have successfully completed at least their first and second years (L1 and L2) of the “Diplomes d’études en Architecture (DEEA)” and be in the process of completing their third and final year (L3). Successful candidates will be admitted subject to the successful completion of their L3 year and obtention of the DEEA Degree.
Candidates holding a Bachelor’s degree in architecture delivered by a higher education institution in a European Union country and officially recognized by the French government as equivalent to the DEEA, may apply directly for the dual degree program by following the application link below.

CANDIDATES FROM OUTSIDE THE EUROPEAN UNION
Candidates holding a degree in architecture delivered by a higher education institution outside the European Union must first apply for admission to the DEA Master in Architecture via the DAP procedure. The application for the dual degree program can be made in parallel but the application for the dual degree will only be taken into account if the candidate’s DAP application is deemed admissible for an entry level to the DEA.

Step 2 - Interview for pre-selected candidates in May 

The candidate’s personal and professional motivation will be evaluated before a joint jury of representatives from both partner institutions, ENSAS and KIT.

Required Application Documents

  • Cover letter in French and German  
  • CV in French and German;
  • Academic transcripts from Bachelor’s (Licence) degree studies;
  • Portfolio of study and personal projects;
  • Certification of completion of a total of 12 weeks of internship experience 
  • Certification of German language proficiency, minimum level B2 (→ click here for list of accepted certifications);
  • For international candidates, certification of a minimum level B2 in French (in accordance with the European frame of reference for languages).

 

Announcement of admission results by email. No results will be announced by telephone. Candidates who will not be admitted by validation of prior learning will not be able to apply for admission to a lower level.

Indicative list of French diplomas that may allow entry into Year 4: double engineering degree from TPE or INSA and Architecture degree from ENSA, Civil Engineering degree from Ponts et Chaussées.

REGISTRATION FEES

  • 512 euros in Master ;
  • 91 euros of CVEC (Contribution Vie Étudiante et de Campus);
    other optional expenses (Material kits, student associations).

This program allows participating students to benefit from academic recognition in France and Germany, but also to integrate more easily into the French, German and international job market. The double Master’s degree can be followed by a registration in the Habilitation year for the Master’s degree in its own name (HMONP), or can be followed by a registration in a doctoral program since the training provides an introduction to research.

Habilitation of project management in one’s own name
